November Senior/Scholarship Update

Seniors: The November Senior/Scholarship Update is now posted. Be sure to check it out for all the latest news and scholarships. This month PG & E has scholarships for collegebound students who live in Northern California and there are quite a few of them. Also, Soroptimist Club of the Eel River Valley is sponsoring a local award (Violet Richardson Award) for female students with lots of volunteer/community service hours. Finally, the Gates Millenium Scholarship application is available for low income students who are planning to go to college and have Native American, Hispanic, African American or Asian Pacific Islander ancestry. The Gates Scholarship award criteria is for a student with a 3.3 GPA, U.S. citizenship, leadership abilities and eligible for the free/reduced lunch list. The award winner will receive a full four year scholarship to the four year college that you plan to attend!

AFS Intercultural Exchange Program is announcing some scholarships for students who plan to be exchange students. They are:
1. The National Security Language Initiative for Youth - this is sponsored by the US State Dept and provides merit-based scholarships for eligible students to learn less commonly taught languages in summer and academic-year overseas immersion programs.
2. The Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES) - this is also funded by the US State Dept and provides scholarships for students to live in selected countries with Muslim populations.

California High School Exit Exam – (CAHSEE) :                                                                         
Juniors and Seniors that have either not taken or not passed the English or the Math section of the exit exam will being taking the necessary sections next week as follows:         
  • Tuesday, November 1st 2011 – English Section  
  • Wednesday, November 2nd 2011- Math Section
Passes will be sent to students 1st period classes on the day(s) of testing.

Seniors - HSU Admission Day

Seniors: If you have already registered for HSU Admission Day and are planning to attend, be sure to bring a copy of your transcript and SAT scores (if available). If you haven't registered for HSU Admission Day, but still want to attend, its OK to come as long as you bring a paper copy of your submitted HSU application, a transcript and SAT scores (if available). UC Reps on Campus

Attn College Bound Juniors and Seniors:
UC Reps from UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced will be on campus on Tuesday, Nov. 1 to talk to students about applying to UC and give information about their campuses. This is a great opportunity to hear about UC requirements, the personal essay and specific majors on each campus.They will be in the library at 2 p.m. and if you'd like to attend, please sign up in the office.

American Indian College Motivation Day - Nov. 3

HSU is hosting its annual American Indian College Motivation Day on Thursday, Nov. 3. This is an all-day affair with lots of workshops, speakers, college recruiters and great food (continental breakfast and free lunch!). They would like all students to attend if they have Native American ancestry. If you'd like to go, pick up a permission slip and return it to your counselor as soon as possible. We will be providing a bus for all students who plan to attend. Any questions, see your counselor.

HSU Admission Day Deadline is Approaching Fast

Seniors: If you want to attend HSU Admission Day on Sat. Oct 22, you'll need to submit your application online at csumentor.edu by Oct. 16th. also, don't forget to register for the event online at the following website: humboldt.edu/falladmissionsday/
On this day you can tour the campus, check out various programs, meet the admissions, financial aid and EOP people and find out that day if you are admitted or not.
