Seniors: College Knowledge Scholarship Opportunity

Seniors:  Calsoap/College Knowledge is sponsoring a scholarship that awards students money for college.
Awards: $3,000 per year (renewable for 4 years) if you are planning to attend a 4 year college
                 $1,500 per year (renewable for 2 years( if you are planning to attend a community
                 college or trade/tech school
To be eligible, you’ll need to complete an application and also have 9 hours of contacts with the Calsoap/College Knowledge personnel. You can attend their free after school tutoring every Tues. and Thurs. in the library ( 1 hour each visit). You can also attend 3 workshops, which will be happening periodically during the school day on campus. Each workshop is equal to 3 hours of contact. The first workshop will be held this Friday, Dec. 2nd during lst, 2nd or 3rd period in the Little Theatre. If you’d like to attend, be sure to get permission from your teacher. Seniors - 4 yr collegebound students- deadlines approaching fast

All seniors who plan to apply to CSUs and UCs will need to have their applications submitted no later than November 30. Please submit ahead of time and don't wait til the last minute. If you do wait and try to submit on November 30.... you may run into crashing servers, so try to avoid that issue altogether.

Also, if you have applied to the EOP program at any CSU, the priority deadline to apply is also November 30. EOP applications are found at the csumentor.edu website. Go to the website, login and look for the "EOP APP" icon in the menu bar in the top right hand side of the Application Manager page. You will need to write about yourself and also list 2 recommenders and their email addresses. If you need to pick anyone from Fortuna High as a recommender, everyone has an email with their first initial, last name, then @fuhsdistrict.org.

High School Summer Scholars Program (5 weeks, credit)

New Counseling Staff!

Ashlee Stipek, new part time counselor, is a former Fortuna High grad who works primarily with the Special Education and 504 students, and also serves as the new testing coordinator. Ashlee received an undergraduate degree in business and psychology from Humboldt State. Shortly after that she returned to Humboldt to obtain a Masters degree and PPS credential in School Psychology. She works on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays all day.


Laura Jorgensen was recently hired as a part time counseling tech. She will be assisting students in a variety of different ways. Currently she is working with Juniors on their college planning, assisting with test coordination and monitoring community service hours. Laura received her Masters degree and PPS credential in School Counseling from Sonoma State and completed her undergraduate degree in psychology from Chico State. Laura works Monday through Friday in the morning.

EOP Visit for Seniors

On Friday Maria Whaples from the EOP office at HSU will be coming to campus to talk  to Seniors about the EOP program (for all CSUs, not just Humboldt). She will be in the library at 10:45 a.m..  EOP stands for “Equal Opportunity Program” and helps students who are low income, first generation college students. They offer tutoring support, academic advising, a summer bridge program to help you get adjusted to college life AND a scholarship for $1,000. If you haven't received a green info sheet yet, but would like to attend, see Mrs. Austin.

Seniors: December SAT Deadline Approaching Fast

Seniors: The deadline to register for the Dec. 3rd SAT is Tues. Nov. 8th. This is the last SAT of the year and probably the last test you can take and still have your scores sent to colleges on time. To register, go to: www.collegeboard.com. If you need a fee waiver, see Mrs. Austin. After this deadline, the only way you'll be allowed to register is if you pay a late fee.

ASVAB Test for Students Planning to Join the Military

If you're planning to sign up for the military, 
you'll need to take the ASVAB test -a vocational 
inventory that assesses your career goals. 
This year, the ASVAB will beheld here on 
Thursday, Nov. 17th. If you've taken it already, 
but want to try for ahigher score, feel free to 
sign up again. This test is free.
