Financial Aid Night for Seniors and Parents

Seniors: On Wednesday, Dec. 11, 6 - 7 p.m. in the library, we will be hosting an informational session on financial aid for students and parents. General financial aid information will be presented by representatives from the County office as well as the local colleges. Hope to see everyone there!

Seniors: The December Update is now posted. Check it out for the latest news and scholarships. December is the kick off month for financial aid. Be sure to get your PIN this month. One for you and one for your parent. To get your PIN, go to www.pin.ed.gov.

CSU Fullerton President's Scholars Program Full Tuition Scholarship

Seniors: If you are planning to apply to CSU Fullerton, here's a scholarship just in. The CSU Fullerton President's Scholars Program is looking for applicants. Eligibility: GPA of 3.75, above average SAT scores, community service and must apply to CSU Fullerton by Nov. 30. Winners will receive a full tuition scholarship, generous annual stipend, laptop computer, priority registration, free parking and automatic admission to the Honors program.

Sophomore HOBY Rep Chosen

Congratulations to Sophomores Gillian Borges and Cody Hurst. Gillian was selected as the sophomore Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership delegate from Fortuna High and Cody Hurst was picked as the lst alternate in case Gillian can't make it. Gillian will be representing our school at the statewide conference next June at Sacramento State University. Special thanks to all teachers who took the time to vote.

November Senior Update

Attn Seniors: The November Senior/Scholarship Update is now posted. Be sure to check it out online at the counseling blog (fuhscounseling.blogspot.com), in your senior classes, in the library and in the counseling office. This month there are a couple of local scholarships including the Elks Club Most Valuable Student Scholarship and the Violet Richardson Award. Also some regional scholarships are included like the Sons of Italy and Native Sons of the Golden West Scholarships. Be sure to check it out!

The deadline to register for the Dec, 7 SAT is Friday, Nov. 8.

If you have applied to a UC or CSU, this is your last chance to take the test and have your scores sent to colleges on time. Need a fee waiver, see Mrs. Austin

HSU Coming to FUHS to meet with Seniors for Instant Admissions on Nov. 14

Seniors:
If you applied to Humboldt State, but couldn't make it to HSU Fall Admission Day, don't worry. Romi from HSU will be on campus on Thursday, Nov. 14 to meet with students who applied and assess them for instant admission. You will be able to find out that day if you are admitted or not. HSU Admission Day for Seniors

If you are applying to Humboldt State, then you should definitely plan to attend HSU Fall Admission Day on Friday, Oct. 25th. On this day, you will get a campus tour, meet new people, gather lots of information and best of all, you will get to find out if you are instantly admitted! In order to attend, you will need to submit your HSU application and register online by Oct. 17 . To apply, go to csumentor.edu. To register for admission day, go to humboldt.edu/fall. On Oct. 25, have your parent excuse you from school and let Tammy Young know that you will be attending HSU Admission Day. This is considered an excused school activity. Need help, see Mrs. Austin

Violet Richardson Soroptimist Award $1,000

The local Soroptimist Club is awarding $1,000 to a deserving female student, who is an outstanding community volunteer The Violet Richardson Award Program will be honoring a student who is involved in volunteer efforts such as fighting drugs, crime and violence, cleaning up the environment, working to end discrimination anf poverty and any other actions that benefit women. Pick up applications from your counselor or go online and type into google: "violet richardson application online" to find a copy you can email in. The deadline to apply is Dec. lst.

Sophomores - HOBY Opportunity for Outstanding Sophomore Leaders

Sophomores:

The Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership program (HOBY) is looking for one outstanding sophomore from FUHS to attend a leadership workshop next June. This is a great opportunity to gain leadership skills, meet other outstanding sophomores from across the state, and have lots of fun at the same time. HOBY is looking for students who have outstanding communication skills, are creative thinkers and problem solvers, are sensitive to the needs of others and enjoy participating in service activities. One outstanding sophomore will be chosen by a panel of teachers to represent FUHS at the all-expense paid weekend workshop. Pick up applications and more information from Mrs. Austin. Applications are due on Friday, Oct. 25.

UC Davis Rep Coming to FUHS!!





A rep from UC Davis will be on campus on Thursday, Sept. 26th during first period. If you would like to attend, please sign up in the office and get your first period teacher's permission. UC Davis has excellent programs like animal science, agriculture, viticulture, engineering, fine arts, pre-med and pre-vet. Davis has a beautiful tree-lined campus, with lots of sunny weather and is close to the city life of Sacramento.

Eureka High College Night

Eureka High is hosting College/Career Night on Wed. Sept. 25 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. All students are welcome to come, but you'll need to provide your own transportation. There will be college reps from various universities, military recruiters, speakers on various topics including the California State Universities, NCAA eligibility and writing the UC essay. This is a great opportunity to start your college "shopping".

Rep Visits from Southern Oregon University and Oregon Institute of Technology

Juniors and Seniors: College reps from Southern Oregon University and Oregon Institute of Technology (OIT) will be here on Thursday, Sept. 26th. Sign up in the office if you'd like to attend.

Southern Oregon University - beautiful, small campus located in downtown Ashland. has some really great programs like music, business, hospitality, physics, teaching, theatre arts and digital art. Ashland is the home of the shakespeare festival and SOU's theatre arts department includes studies in acting, costuming, stage lighting, stage management, shakespeare and directing. The SOU rep will be on campus during 4th period. Be sure to sign up in the office.

OIT - small campus, located in Klamath Falls, Oregon, with lots of interesting professional programs. Popular majors include: dental hygiene, sonography (ultrasound), X ray tech, civil and mechanical engineering, geomatics (GIS), and renewable energy engineering. The OIT rep will be on campus during 6th period. Be sure to sign up in the office.

Schedule Changes 2013 New School Year



Schedule Changes: Due to increased enrollment, classes are very full and schedule changes will only be available for students who have serious academic issues or an incorrect schedule. To inquire about changes to your schedule, make an appointment to see your counselor. Schedule changes will only be permitted if there is space available. Schedule change forms will need to be signed by teachers and parents and then returned to the counseling office before starting your new classes. Deadline to change: Friday Aug. 30.

UC Davis Young Scholars Program

This summer program, which runs from June 23rd to August 3rd, provides rising juniors and seniors the opportunity to do original research in biology and the natural sciences and acquire university credit in the process. The application fee is $25 and the deadline to apply is April 1. Limited fee reductions to defray program costs are available on a sliding scale. Mark E. Reed Scholarship

The Mark E. Reed Scholarship, sponsored by Green Diamond Resource Company, offers eight scholarships of $3,000 each to seniors who will pursue post-secondary education. 10th Annual Northcoast Youth Summit

"Illuminate Your Future" is the theme of the 10th Annual Northcoast Youth Summit, to be held Saturday, March 16 at College of the Redwoods. The event features four workshop sessions with themes ranging from "Workforce Do's and Don'ts" and "Rockin' Resumes" to "CPR Certification" and "How to Sell Anything." Conference runs from 8:45 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and includes lunch. Early Bird registration by February 15 costs $10; final registration deadline is Feb. 28 for a cost of $30. HAF Scholarships

The Humboldt Area Foundation (HAF) sponsors a scholarship program each year featuring dozens of scholarships and requiring only one application, due March 10. In February, HAF will hold a workshop at Fortuna High designed to help students complete their online application. The workshop will take place on Tuesday, February 26th during 2nd and 3rd periods in the B Lab. Sign-ups will start during the first week of February. Be sure to sign up and get assistance filling out your application!

Scholarship Opportunities

The Eureka Emblem Club and Barbara Payne Memorial Fund are offering college-bound seniors the chance to earn a $1,000 scholarship. Three scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded by the Eureka Emblem Club and one $1,000 by the Barbara Payne Memorial Fund. Your application must include two letters of recommendation, your transcript, and a written statement explaining why a college education is important to you and outlining your present career goals and objectives. See Ms. Slater or Mrs. Hile for an application.

Student Video Contest

Would you like the chance to win $1000 by putting your filmmaking skills to use for a good cause? Directing Change, administered by the CA Mental Health Services Authority, is sponsoring a video contest with a choice of two topics: "Suicide Prevention" or "Eliminating Stigma" (surrounding mental illness). You must adhere to certain rules and have an advisor in order to compete. The deadline for submissions is March 1st. Go to www.directingchange.org for contest rules and information.

2013 Summer Science Internship

Sponsored by the Arthritis Foundation, the 2013 Summer Science Internship provides 12 outstanding Northern California high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to receive hands-on experience in the fields of rheumatology and immunology. This summer's internship will take place at Stanford University and the University of California - San Francisco. Interns are expected to work 40 hours a week over 8 weeks and will receive a stipend. All applicants must have reached their 17th birthday by June 1, 2013. Deadline to apply is Friday, February 22.
