Last Posting for this Blog

This will be the last posting for the fuhscounseling blog. Karla Austin is retiring and a new counselor will be taking over seniors next year and using his/her own communication system. Congratulations to all of the seniors who did so well this year! Also congrats to all of the other students and parents on having a wonderful year. Hope this blog was helpful to you all and good luck in the future.

Senior Awards Night - Wed. June 8 7 - 9 p.m. in the Theatre

Seniors: If you are on the list to be honored on Wed. at Senior Awards night, please wear appropriate attire for the evening. At this event, the whole community shows up and we want to make a good impression. So... plan to come, wear something nice, like business casual and see you there! Senior Awards Night - Wed. June 8

Seniors: Senior Awards Night will be happening on Wed. June 8 at 7 p.m. in the Mary Hanley theatre. This is the night that we celebrate all the awards, honors and scholarships received by the Class of 2016. Be on the lookout for a small light blue postcard that will be mailed out next week. If you receive a postcard inviting you to come to awards night, it means that you will be honored or acknowledged in some way. Awards may or may not be monetary in nature. A list of award winners will also be posted in Senior English and History classes closer to the date of the ceremony. If you are one of the lucky recipients, plan to come and also plan to invite your family to help celebrate. There will be surprise scholarship winners announced that night so it should be a fun and exciting event.

CR Seniors - Trio Program applicants

Attn: CR Bound Seniors Who Applied to the Trio program:
Brady Reed from the CR Trio program will be on campus doing interviews with CR applicants on Tuesday, May 24 in the library. If you applied, you will receive a pass sometime during the day to go to the library to meet with Brady. CR Bound Seniors

Attn: CR Bound Seniors - Don't forget to complete your Fall and Spring class registrations as soon as possible. The sooner you do this, the better chance of getting the classes you want. You can tell if your classes are reserved if you have reached the payment part and submit your payment. Also if you reach the payment part and see that your total fee is $39 it means your FAFSA information successfully went through and you qualified for the BOG fee waiver.

May Senior/Scholarship Update Now Posted

Seniors: Here's the last Senior/Scholarship Update that includes scholarships available. Yes, that's right... we have come to the end of scholarship season. Don't forget to check out the last opportunities to apply for local scholarships. Also, in the Senior Update be sure to make plans to attend the CR orientation/registration field trip if you are headed there this fall. The trips will be on Wed., May 4 and Mon. May 9. Plan to meet at the 14th St. parking lot on the day of your trip. Please turn in any permission slips to Mrs. Austin ASAP if you have not yet done so.

CR Program - Pharmacy Tech

CR is offering a comprehensive 50 hour Pharmacy Tech program beginning May 10 - June 28. This program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy tech and also to take the Pharmacy Tech Certification Board exam. Classes will be at the CR Community Education Center at 525 D St, Eureka, Room 111 & 112. Time/Days: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 - 9:30 p.m. The cost of the class will be $1,199. CR Field Trip for Seniors May 4 and May 9

Seniors planning to go to CR: Return your permission slips to Mrs. Austin by Friday, April 29, then plan to meet at the parking lot at 8:20 a.m. on the day of your trip.
Trip 1 - Wednesday, May 4 - morning only (orange permission slip).
Trip 2 - Monday, May 9 - all day - sack lunches will be provided (white permission slip)

Trips to CR for Orientation/Registration in May

Attn CR Bound Seniors: Due to the large number of seniors going to CR this year, we will be scheduling an additional trip in May to complete orientation and registration. We will still keep the Monday, May 9th date for most of you, however, we will also have another morning trip scheduled on Wednesday, May 9th. Students who received white permission slips will still need to return them signed to Mrs. Austin.  The other students who received the orange permission slips for May 11th will be moved to the Wednesday, May 4th trip. Students who were added late will also be added to the MAY 4th trip. Please return all permission slips to Mrs. Austin. If this is too confusing, see Mrs. Austin for more info. You will also probably be receiving reminders and permission slip reminders as well.

April Senior/Scho;larship Now Posted

Attn Seniors: The April Senior/Scholarship Update is now posted so be sure to check it out. This month has info on colleges, i.e. notifying your UC or CSU before the deadline of May lst and financial aid award info. April is the month where you finalize your college and financial plans for next year. Regarding the Scholarship Update this month: There are lots of local scholarships including Kiwanis, Rotary, Fortuna Middle School, Rio Dell Teachers, American Business Womens, Fortuna Women's Group, McCrigler, Harris, Bettis, Rovai and the Tomasini. There are a few scholarships that don't require an application like the Murray Family, Marty Kelley and the Mrs. Bissell scholarships so be sure to check out the scholarship update so you will know what is required for these scholarships. YCC Summer Jobs for Youths

The Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) is looking for applicants, ages 15 - 18 years of age,  for their 8 week summer job program. Students will be working in Redwood National Park in the Orick area on projects including trail maintenance, removal of exotic plants, and improving wildlife habitats. The job involves hard physical labor and pays a wage of $10 per hour for a 40 hour work week. If you are interested, pick up an application from your counselor. Students will need to provide their own lunch and transportation to the National Park Service's Arcata office. Applicants will be selected on a random basis.

Scholarship Deadline Reminders

Attn Seniors: The Humboldt Area Foundation Scholarships are due on Wed. March 16th. Please don't forget to apply! website: hafoundation.org. You'll need an uploaded transcript, 2 letters of recommendation, a personal essay and the application.

Also, the Northcoast College Access Scholarship is due on Tues. March 15. This is a really great opportunity to win $1,000 for a community college or $2,500 towards a 4 year university. Scholarships are renewable. To apply, go to:decadeofdifference.org and look for the scholarship link.

March Senior/Scholarship Update Now Posted

Attn Seniors: The March Senior/Scholarship update is now posted. 
March is the peak of scholarship season. After this month, you will notice
a big drop in the number of scholarships available, so now is the time to get
your letters of recommendation and submit those local scholarships. 
The deadline of the Humboldt Area Foundation scholarships is March 16th 
and the deadline for the North Coast College Access scholarships is March 15th. 
Yes they are lots of work, but just imagine how great you will feel if you happen 
to win one! On March 7th, CR will be on campus for placement testing. 
Also this month many CSUs will be hosting preview days and/or encouraging housing 
applications. CSUs will also want you to sign up for their placement tests, 
the ELM and EPT if needed. UCs and CSUs will notify of acceptance this month.

CR Placement Testing Schedule

Attn CR bound Seniors: On Monday morning, Mar. 7, you will be taking the CR math and English placement tests in the B Labs. If your Econ teacher is Mr. Benbow, you will need to be at the B Labs at the beginning of lst period. If your Econ teacher is Ms. Heavilin, Mr. Stockdale or Ms. Howe, you will need to be at the B Labs at the beginning of 3rd period. Please be ON TIME! CR placement tests are important to determine placement in your college classes. If you have a debate for English that conflicts with testing or you have another issue that prevents you from testing, please see Mrs. Austin as soon as possible.

More Scholarships Just In

Attn Seniors: A couple of new LOCAL scholarships came in after the last update:
Northcoast College Access Scholarship through the HCOE Decade of Difference Program
$2,500 for a 4 yr. college - renewable for 4 years
$1,000 for a 2 yr. college (no vocational programs) - renewable for 2 years
Criteria: Priority given to low income, first generation college students, must have completed FAFSA or Dream Act by March 2, GPA of 2.5 or higher
Deadline: March 15

California Women in Timber Scholarship
$250 - $1,000
Criteria: Must have minimum GPA of 2.5 and plan to attend either HSU or CR during the next year.  Scholarship is open to students pursuing any course of study; however, special consideration will be given to students pursuing a career in natural resources or forestry.  Special consideration will also be given to students whose immediate family is or was employed in the forest products industry. Application must include cover letter, transcript, SAT or ACT scores, and two letters of recommendation.

Don & Roy Splawn Scholarship
up to $1,000 (usually 1 student from FUHS gets this one) renewable
Criteria: GPA 2.6 or higher, plan to go to college, have financial need, looking for students that have been through extraordinary circumstances.

CR Placement Testing for FUHS Seniors

Attn CR-Bound Seniors: On Monday morning, March 7, we will have CR placement testing for all seniors who submitted a CR application in the B Labs. You will be receiving information on what time to show up for testing that day so be on the lookout. If you would like to do some practice testing, go to CR's Academic Support Center website:

From this website you can click on links to practice for both English and math tests.

Humboldt Area Foundation Scholarship Workshops

Attn Seniors: Craig from the Humboldt Area Foundation will be in the B Labs on Tuesday, Feb. 23rd to do workshops for all seniors on the Humboldt Area Foundation scholarships. You will automatically be attending with your senior English classes. Craig will help you start the application, but you will need to make sure to finish the application and submit it before the deadline of March 16. Plan on submitting the application along with two letters of recommendation, a transcript and short essays. While you are waiting for the workshop, here is the application website in case you want to get an early start: www.hafoundation.org. There are lots and lots of scholarships available for all students. There is even one for FUHS seniors planning to attend CR (Willard and Donna Mullan Scholarship). CR Application Workshop - Tuesday Jan 12th

Attn CR Bound Seniors: On Tuesday, Jan. 12 during periods 2, 3, 4 & 6 we will be having a CR application workshop in the B Labs. If you already indicated interest in applying to CR, you are already signed up for this workshop. On the day of the workshop, you will receive a pass to attend during one of these workshops sometime during the day. There will be a master list of CR workshop attendees available with senior teachers and also with Mrs. Austin. If for some reason your plans have changed or you've already completed your CR application, let Mrs. Austin know.

January Senior/Scholarship Now Posted

Attn Seniors: The January Senior/Scholarship update is now posted. Check it out for
all the latest news and scholarships. This month is financial aid month. Be sure to
submit your FAFSA or Dream Act. Also Thursday is Cash for College workshop Day in
the B Labs from 1 - 6. Come by if you need FAFSA help, or want to take the survey
so you'll be eligible for the drawing to win a $250 scholarship. This month in the
scholarship update the local scholarships include: HSU scholarships, 
Dr. Charles Rigney Scholarship, Grange Co-Op (Ag) Scholarship, Humboldt Redwoods
Community Scholarship and the Humboldt Area Foundation Scholarships
